Use this when you have just said something that sounds too big, too dramatic, or too good to be true, and you want to head off the listener's skepticism before they push back. It is a small rhetorical move that says 'I know how this sounds — and I am telling you anyway.' Common in storytelling, reviews, and news framing.
Structure
..., shì zhēn de, bú shì kuāzhāng
How to Think About It
This is a pre-emptive defense, not new information. The 是真的 confirms; the 不是夸张 names the exact doubt the speaker assumes you are about to have. The pair only works because Chinese loves explicit contrast — saying just 是真的 sounds like an answer to a yes/no question, while adding 不是夸张 reframes the previous claim itself as worth defending.
Examples
nà jiā diàn páiduì pái le sān gè xiǎoshí, shì zhēn de, bú shì kuāzhāng.
The line at that place was three hours long — really, no exaggeration.
tā yí gè rén bān le èrshí xiāng shū, shì zhēn de, bú shì kuāzhāng.
He carried twenty boxes of books by himself — true story, not exaggerating.
The concert tickets sold out in ten seconds — seriously, not an exaggeration.
Common Mistake
Learners drop the comma and try to glue it into the main clause as one breath: '这是真的不是夸张的事情。' That turns 不是夸张 into an awkward modifier. Native speakers keep it as a tagged-on coda, almost a second sentence, set off by a comma.
Don't Confuse With
Question form — the listener asks this back. 是真的,不是夸张 is the speaker pre-empting that very question.
Same idea, stronger and more colloquial. Often stands alone: 'It's not exaggerating at all.' Use 是真的,不是夸张 when you also want to confirm the truth, not just deny the exaggeration.
