Today let's talk about a gripping World Cup knockout game: Canada snatched a 1-0 winner over South Africa.

This is the first match of this World Cup's knockout stage, and it told everyone, in the most classic way, of the cruelty and charm of knockout football.

First, a quick word on the difference between the knockouts and the group stage.

The group stage is a round-robin; losing one game doesn't matter much, and you can still climb back later.

But once you enter the knockouts, the rule becomes "one game decides life or death" — win and advance, lose and pack straight home, with no way back.

So every knockout game is an out-and-out "do-or-die battle," every action a player makes carrying enormous pressure.

Now a word on the two teams.

Canada is one of the hosts of this World Cup, this game played on home soil, with the whole nation's fans behind them.

South Africa comes from Africa, a sizable surprise of this World Cup — they played quite tenaciously in the group stage to fight their way into the knockouts.

The two are actually fairly close in quality, so pre-match it was widely seen as a hard, evenly matched battle.

Sure enough, the game was unusually tight.

Precisely because neither could afford to lose, both teams played extra cautiously, not daring to push up and risk it, fearing the opponent would seize a counter.

So for the whole first part and more, the scene was rather dull, genuinely threatening attacks few and far between, the score long deadlocked at zero to zero.

As time slipped away minute by minute, the people in the stands and before their screens grew more and more tense: is this going to be dragged into extra time?

Yet just as almost everyone was ready to accept a draw and brace for extra time, a dramatic scene appeared.

The game had entered stoppage time when Canada's Eustáquio suddenly stepped up to score the only goal of the match.

This goal came extremely late, almost the last strike of the whole game — one to zero, Canada landed a winner before the final whistle!

At that moment, the whole stadium utterly erupted, Canada's players rushing over to celebrate wildly, while South Africa's players slumped to the ground, faces full of disbelief.

How to judge this game?

For Canada, this is a thoroughly nervy yet utterly precious win.

As hosts, they withstood the enormous home pressure, and at the most crucial moment seized the one chance they had, advancing by a hair.

To win such a gripping hard battle in front of their own fans — the lift to the whole team's morale is beyond what words can measure.

More importantly, their World Cup journey can continue forward.

For a host nation, this is especially precious.

Hosting a World Cup is itself an event a country gets only once in decades; and for a host to go far at the World Cup they host is the script countless fans dream of.

Canada's road here actually hasn't been easy — they had their ups and downs in the group stage, even lost a game, but at every key moment this team could grit its teeth and hold on.

Today's winner is both an expression of the players' ability and a continuation of a kind of "home-ground fortune."

After advancing to the next round, the nation's passion will be further ignited, and this all-out support often turns into extra power for the team on the pitch.

And for South Africa, this defeat is undoubtedly heartbreaking.

They defended extremely tenaciously, almost dragging the game into extra time and earning more possibilities.

Sadly, they fell just short, conceding that fatal goal at the very last moment, and their World Cup journey came to an abrupt end.

But looking back, South Africa's showing this edition far exceeded outside expectations.

To fight their way from the group stage to the knockouts is itself a journey to be proud of.

Losing to host Canada, and by only a single goal, they have nothing whatsoever to regret.

That's Canada one to zero South Africa — a game where a goal at the very last moment defined the cruel beauty of the knockouts.
