On September the fourth, the UN General Assembly took a vote and took a four-hundred-and-fifty-year-old map down off the wall.
A hundred and sixty-four in favour, one against, six abstentions.
The proposal was tabled jointly by African Union member states and the Bahamas, with Togo leading.
Its content: a request that schools, governments, international bodies and technology companies switch to equal-area projections when depicting the world.
Today we are taking this apart: why maps go wrong, what exactly changed, and why it deserves to be treated as a serious matter.
Start with a counter-intuitive fact.
There is no completely correct world map in existence. Not one.
The reason lies in the mathematics itself: a sphere cannot be flattened without stretching.
Gauss's Theorema Egregium proved it — this is impossible, not merely badly done.
So every map is distorted somewhere.
The real question has always been which distortion you choose, and whether you tell the person looking.
The one most common in classrooms worldwide is the Mercator projection.
Made by the sixteenth-century Flemish cartographer Mercator, for an entirely explicit purpose: navigation.
Its core property is that it is conformal — it preserves angles.
A straight line drawn on this map corresponds to a constant compass bearing.
A sailor follows that line and arrives.
In an age without satellite positioning, that property was close to life-saving.
It remains the standard for sea and air navigation today, and the resolution says so explicitly.
The cost is area.
The higher the latitude, the more violent the horizontal stretching, and area inflates with it.
Greenland swells into the appearance of a continent.
Africa straddles the equator, falling exactly in the stretch that is compressed hardest.
The true ratio is fourteen to one; on the map they look nearly equal.
To put it more concretely: Africa's area is enough to hold the mainland United States, China, India and most of Europe at the same time, with room left over.
Up to this point, this is only a technical problem.
It becomes a public one because the map is hanging in the wrong place.
It is on primary school walls, in textbook inserts, on news backdrops, in the default view when you open the map on your phone.
A child looks, from six to sixteen, at a picture that substantially shrinks Africa, and nobody ever adds a note beside it saying "careful, this is distorted."
They will not remember the conclusion of a single geography lesson, but they will form an intuition: Africa is roughly that big.
Intuition is far more stubborn than knowledge.
This is what the people behind the resolution actually care about: a tool designed for navigation became the default picture of the world, and quietly did four hundred and fifty years of work on how people perceive it.
The alternative is called the Equal Earth projection, made in 2018 by three cartographers.
It preserves true relative area, at the cost of some distortion in shape.
It has to be admitted that it lies as well — it has simply moved the lie from area to shape.
But for a classroom that trade is clearly worth it: a student needs to know which continent is larger, not the precise angle of a stretch of coastline.
In other words, what changed here is the location of the distortion, moved to where it does less harm.
Two things must be stated clearly, or this would not be honest.
First, the resolution is not legally binding.
It is a request, not a law, and no country, school or company is compelled to comply.
Second, it explicitly does not challenge the use of Mercator for maritime and aerial navigation.
So the real conclusion is this: Mercator was used, for a very long time, in a role it was never designed to carry.
And there is one more layer worth saying on its own.
The weight of this vote lies in who tabled it, and why now.
A technical question argued over in cartography for decades was this time pushed onto the international agenda by the very party the map had been shrinking.
What was really being voted on is who gets to decide what the world looks like.
Two questions to leave you with.
The first is concrete: that map on your classroom wall, which you looked at for years — did you ever once doubt it?
The second is bigger: if every map must be distorted somewhere, then what kind of power is held by whoever decides where the distortion goes?
There is no standard answer to these two questions, but they are worth thinking through slowly.
