Today let's talk about a roller-coaster World Cup knockout game: hosts USA, a man down, dug in to beat Bosnia two to zero and march proudly into the last 16.

This win was both hard-earned and uplifting.

First, a word on the background.

This was a home game through and through, tens of thousands of American fans pouring into the stadium to roar the hosts on.

As one of this World Cup's hosts, the USA carried no small amount of pressure.

As the first half neared its end, the USA found their chance.

In the forty-fifth minute, their forward Balogun seized a chance in front of goal and scored, giving the USA a one to zero lead.

Carrying that precious goal, the USA walked into half-time full of confidence.

However, as the second half began, everything suddenly changed.

In the sixty-fourth minute, Balogun went in too hard in a challenge and stepped on an opponent's ankle.

After a video review, the referee decisively showed a red card, sending off the very man who had just scored.

Just like that, the USA went from being ahead to the back-foot position of a man down.

Ten men against the opponent's eleven — every minute that followed was an ordeal.

Bosnia seized the numerical edge, launching wave after wave of fierce attacks, trying to level the score.

But the USA players showed astonishing willpower, the whole team dropping back and building a wall of flesh and blood.

Every clearance, every block in front of goal drew a tidal roar of applause from the fans.

Just when everyone assumed the USA could only defend for their lives, a surprise arrived.

In the eighty-second minute, the USA won a free-kick in the attacking half.

Tillman took it, and the ball curved in a beautiful arc over the wall and straight into the goal — two to zero.

That goal not only sealed the win, but felt like the best reward for the whole team's stubborn defending.

In the end, a ten-man USA withstood all the pressure and cleanly took the game.

So, how should this game be judged?

For the USA, this is a hugely significant win.

Bear in mind, the USA had gone a long time without a World Cup knockout win, and this breakthrough was hard-earned.

Rarer still, they did it in the adversity of a man down, on the strength of that never-say-die unity and fight.

For Bosnia, this defeat is genuinely galling.

They had a man more yet couldn't break through, and in the end conceded a second, going out to their regret.

But that's how it is on the pitch: a numerical advantage can never be directly converted into a win.

That's USA two to zero Bosnia, a game belonging to perseverance and unity.

See you next match.
