Today let's talk about a heart-stopping World Cup knockout game: Brazil edged Japan two to one.

The score is small, but the process was full of twists — title-favorite Brazil were pushed to the cliff's edge by Japan, and only escaped death with a stoppage-time winner.

First, the two sides.

Brazil is the very top giant of world soccer, five-time World Cup winners, packed with stars, dazzling in attack, always among the top title favorites.

Japan comes from Asia, one of the fastest-improving teams in recent years.

Most of their players are in European leagues; smart in style, active in running, and superbly cohesive in their combinations, they're long past being a side to be steamrolled by the strong.

So while pre-match opinion broadly favored Brazil, quite a few also warned: Japan is a genuinely hard bone to gnaw.

Let's look at the game.

The flow of the game caught everyone off guard from the start.

In the twenty-ninth minute, Japan's Sano seized a chance to break through first, one to zero.

Japan, of all teams, led Brazil! The whole stadium was in uproar.

Behind, Brazil's shoulders suddenly bore heavier pressure — after all, this is the knockouts, and one loss means the five-star Brazil packs up early and heads home.

Fortunately, Brazil, after all, have deep pedigree.

They didn't fall into disarray, but ramped up the attack, gradually pushing Japan back into their own half.

In the fifty-sixth minute, the experienced veteran Casemiro stepped up to level it, one to one.

After leveling, Brazil briefly held the initiative, but Japan's defense was full of resilience, repeatedly resolving Brazil's attacks.

The score deadlocked at one to one, and it looked set to be dragged into extra time, even penalties, the atmosphere growing ever more tense.

Yet a truly strong team can always step up at the most crucial moment.

In stoppage time, Martinelli seized a chance and scored the priceless winner, two to one!

Brazil completed a winner before the final whistle and advanced by a hair; while Japan, just a step from a miracle, fell in heartbreak.

It's actually worth talking about the two heroes behind Brazil's goals.

Casemiro, who leveled it, is a veteran who has played many years in Europe, immensely experienced.

When behind, what a team most needs is exactly this kind of big brother who can steady the nerves and step up.

And Martinelli, who scored the winner, represents Brazil's other side — young, full of drive, daring to go for it at the very last moment.

One old, one young — one to steady, one to charge — together they make up exactly what Brazil most needed.

This also shows that a truly strong team relies never on any one star, but on players of different types each doing their job and covering for each other at the crucial moment.

How to judge this game?

For Brazil, this is a win won nervily, but also won just in time.

They nearly came unstuck against Japan, but in the end, on their deep pedigree, rich experience, and that "hold firm at the crucial moment" champion's quality, they took the game.

Still, this game is no less than an alarm bell: there are no weak teams in the knockouts, and to go all the way, Brazil must produce a more focused, more stable display.

And for Japan, though beaten, they leave with honor.

Facing the five-star Brazil, they not only showed no stage fright but scored first and fought to the death, pushing their opponent to the brink for a time.

Sadly they fell just short, conceding at the last moment and brushing past advancing.

But in this game, Japan won the world's respect, and once more proved: Asian soccer is chasing down the world's strong teams at an astonishing pace.

That's Brazil two to one Japan — a knockout game where Brazil escaped death.
