A business jet carrying nine people crashed onto a residential street in Palm Beach County, Florida, and the fuselage immediately caught fire and exploded.

The seven passengers and two crew members on board did not survive, and a man sitting in a car on the ground was injured.

The crash site is near West Palm Beach, with ballfields, shops, and homes lining the street.

The Learjet 60, which received airworthiness certification in the 1990s, was operated by Aurora Aviation and did business under the name "Upper Jets."

That morning it took off from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas, bound for North Eleuthera in the Bahamas.

While flying at 35,000 feet, the crew reported encountering light clear ice and moderate turbulence, and the plane pitched up and down about 700 feet.

The outside air temperature was minus 53 degrees Fahrenheit, and they immediately requested to climb to 37,000 feet.

At around 12:50 p.m., the pilot's distress call came over the radio: the plane was descending at 10,000 feet per minute.

He then reported that the plane had entered an overspeed condition, with a descent rate of 20,000 feet per minute.

Twenty-year-old co-pilot Nathalia Filgueiras said the plane had banked to 60 degrees, "We are going to crash into the ground."

She then added, "We're out of time," and about a minute after the distress signal was sent, the plane hit the ground.

Thomas Chapman of the National Transportation Safety Board said the plane appeared to have broken apart during the descent.

Debris scattered along the street, covering a stretch of about half a mile, and about 600 people in a nearby mobile home community were subsequently evacuated.

Chapman said weather is a major focus of the investigation, and another focus is how the pilots and controllers determined the flight path.

In his words, they need to figure out "who knew what and when, and what actions were taken."

Among the victims were Captain Jeff Gregory and co-pilot Filgueiras, as well as passenger Adam Robinson.

Robinson was a tech entrepreneur from Texas, and this time he was traveling with family and friends.

The board dispatched about 20 investigators to the site, and the investigation into the cause of the accident has only just begun.

The board also said it will investigate whether there are similarities between this accident and previous crashes of the same aircraft model.
