English transcript reference

First, about the website LinkedIn.

People write posts on it: about work, about ideas, about what they got done this year.

These posts all used to be written by people.

Not any more.

On the thirtieth of July, LinkedIn added a new option inside the three dots on every post.

It carries an extremely blunt sentence: this seems like AI slop.

Whichever post strikes you as machine-written, press it, and that counts as a report.

Three weeks later the figure came out: more than a million.

More than a million people pressed the same button.

Was it any use?

LinkedIn says it was.

They took those reports, put them together with their own classification system, and retuned the whole thing.

The result: content judged to be machine-generated lost forty percent of its views.

And there is another figure worth pausing on.

A detection company called Pangram Labs sampled the longer posts on LinkedIn.

Out of a hundred, forty-one were entirely generated by AI.

Not a person writing and AI polishing — machine-written from beginning to end.

Forty percent of long posts not written by a person is a hard proportion to digest.

But what actually stays with me is that million clicks itself.

Because what it means is this: more than a million people each read a post, each arrived at the same judgement, and each reached out and pressed the same place.

And nobody taught them how to tell.

No course, no manual, no correct answer.

They simply read, and read, and felt something was off.

The sentences run properly, the structure is tidy, the punctuation is not wrong — and still there is no flavour.

It is a strange ability, because it cannot be articulated.

You cannot write it into a rule and hand it to somebody else.

But a million clicks show that it exists in a great many people at once.

So the real significance of this may not be how much content LinkedIn cleared away.

It is that it turned this inarticulate judgement into something that could, for the first time, be counted.

A million times is a million people saying the same sentence: I do not want to read this.

Think about it:

You read a passage — can you tell whether a machine wrote it?
