Today let's talk about a World Cup knockout game that set all of Mexico ablaze: hosts Mexico beat Ecuador two to zero to march proudly into the last 16.

This win means something out of the ordinary for Mexico.

First, a word on the background.

This game was played at Mexico's home ground, tens of thousands of fans packing the stadium to bursting.

As one of this World Cup's hosts, Mexico carried huge pressure, and also enjoyed the most fervent support.

Interestingly, a sudden downpour hit before kickoff, delaying the game by a full hour.

But the moment the rain stopped, Mexico played with overwhelming force.

From the start they controlled the tempo, wave after wave crashing at Ecuador's goal.

In the twenty-second minute, Mexico's efforts paid off.

Quiñones collected the ball on the left, drove all the way in, and unleashed a powerful shot from inside the box that flew straight into the net — one to zero.

Just nine minutes later, in the thirty-first, Mexico struck again.

Jiménez pounced on a mistake by an Ecuador defender and calmly slotted home, making it two to zero.

Before the half was even over, Mexico held a commanding two-goal lead and had firmly seized the initiative.

In the second half, a trailing Ecuador badly needed to pull one back and stepped up their attack, trying to prise open the hosts' defense.

But no matter how hard they tried, they never found a way through.

Mexico, meanwhile, controlled the game unhurriedly, holding that two-goal lead steadily, giving the opponent no goal all game, and cleanly keeping a clean sheet.

Here, there's a historical significance especially worth mentioning.

Actually, Mexico had gone a long time without a knockout win like this at a World Cup — that wait stretched nearly forty years.

So when the final whistle blew, the whole stadium erupted in celebration; this was not just a win, but a long-awaited release.

So, how should this game be judged?

For Mexico, this is a thoroughly satisfying complete victory.

Playing at home under enormous pressure, they not only won, but won cleanly and beyond dispute.

The host's status is both a burden and a spur, and today, they turned that spur into real, tangible goals.

Of course, the opponents ahead will only be stronger, and to go further Mexico must keep this focus and fight.

For Ecuador, this defeat is a pity, but shouldn't be judged too harshly.

This was their first knockout appearance in twenty years, and reaching this stage is itself a breakthrough.

This young team will keep growing, and this experience will become a precious asset for them.

That's Mexico two to zero Ecuador, a game belonging to the hosts, and to a stadium full of fans.

See you next match.
