Today, let's break down a World Cup knockout game that sent all of Mexico into a frenzy: hosts Mexico, at their own home ground, thrashed Ecuador two to zero to march proudly into the last 16.
The weight of this win goes far beyond the scoreline itself.
First, let's take in the atmosphere of this game.
This was a home game through and through, tens of thousands of fans packing the entire stadium to bursting, a sea of red, white and green filling every corner.
As one of this World Cup's hosts, Mexico carried the expectations of a whole nation, and enjoyed some of the most fervent support on the planet.
Interestingly, a sudden downpour hit before kickoff, forcing the whole game to be delayed by a full hour.
Yet the heavy rain, far from dampening the hosts' passion, seemed instead to store up even more energy.
The moment the rain stopped, Mexico poured forward with overwhelming force, pinning Ecuador deep in their own half from the opening whistle.
After wave upon wave of attacks, a goal was only a matter of time.
In the twenty-second minute, the deadlock was finally broken.
Quiñones took a pass from Alvarado on the left, sprinted all the way into the box, then unleashed a powerful driven shot that flew straight into the net — one to zero.
Just nine minutes later, the hosts' second goal followed right on its heels.
In the thirty-first minute, Jiménez seized a mistake by an Ecuador defender, played a lovely one-two with Quiñones, and calmly slotted the ball into the far corner — two to zero.
Before the first half was even over, Mexico already held a commanding two-goal lead, gripping their fate firmly in their own hands.
After the change of ends, a trailing Ecuador didn't give up, trying to step up their attack and hit back to pull one goal back as soon as they could.
Yet however they pressed, they could never truly shake the hosts' defense, their few attacks all snuffed out one by one by Mexico.
Mexico, meanwhile, controlled the tempo with ease, running down the clock with slick passing, holding the two-goal lead steadily, giving the opponent no real chance all game, and cleanly keeping a clean sheet.
Which brings us to the true historical weight of this win.
In fact, Mexico had waited far, far too long for a knockout win like this — that number stretched nearly forty years.
So when the final whistle rang out, the whole stadium instantly turned into a sea of joy; this was not merely a place in the next round, but a release spanning generations.
So, how exactly should this game be judged?
For Mexico, this is a thoroughly satisfying, fully deserved complete win.
Rarer still, both their goals were of the highest quality: one a forceful piece of individual skill, the other an exquisite team move, a fine answer at both ends of the pitch.
Playing at home, the greater the pressure and the heavier the responsibility, and they turned every ounce of that heavy weight into fight and goals on the pitch.
With an indisputable win they proved that the host's mantle is not a burden but fuel that can set the whole team alight.
Of course, the opponents ahead will only be stronger, and this home fervor will need to be sustained by win after win.
And for Ecuador, this defeat, though a pity, need not be harshly judged.
Remember, this was their first World Cup knockout appearance in twenty years, and reaching this far is itself a breakthrough and an honor.
Their journey may end here, but this experience will become a precious asset for this young team.
That's Mexico two to zero Ecuador, a game belonging to the hosts, and to a stadium roaring like a tidal wave.
See you next match.
