English transcript reference

In Belgium there is a man called Michiel.

Michiel has a very rare illness.

This illness makes the body grow old unusually fast.

It starts at around two years old.

Other children are growing up; his body was growing old.

There is no drug for this illness, and it cannot be cured.

When Michiel was very small, a doctor examined him and told the family: he will probably only reach twelve.

Twelve.

But Michiel reached twelve, and he was still here.

He reached eighteen, still here.

He reached twenty-five, still here.

Later, he reached twenty-eight.

Among everyone in the world still living with this illness, he was one of the oldest.

These past few years, he filmed himself online every day.

What he filmed was not the illness.

He filmed what he ate today, where he went today, who came to see him today.

A lot of people followed him.

This week, Michiel died.

Twenty-eight.

The doctor said twelve. He walked himself all the way to twenty-eight.

Think about it: someone tells you this is as far as you go.

Would you take one more step anyway?
