During the Beijing HYROX competition, a contestant suddenly lost control of her body, but she continued to finish the race and even took first place.
The contestants behind her had to pass through the same area and use the same batch of equipment.
Therefore, people quickly stopped discussing the results and instead asked: Why didn't the staff stop the race in time?
HYROX is an indoor competition that combines running and strength training.
After running a segment, contestants enter the training zone, complete an exercise, and then continue running.
The equipment is reused by many contestants.
As soon as one person leaves, the next person arrives quickly.
On September 12, a contestant participated in the Beijing station competition.
During the race, she experienced fecal incontinence, with feces getting on her clothes, the venue, and the equipment.
This was a sudden physical issue and should not be a reason to mock her.
However, she continued the race, and the staff did not ask her to stop.
The following contestants did not know if the venue was clean or if the equipment was safe.
This judgment should not be left solely to the contestants currently competing.
The staff could have first called a doctor to help her, and then closed off the problematic area.
They could also have removed the equipment, cleaned it thoroughly, and then reopened it.
This would protect her and also protect the subsequent contestants.
However, the Beijing station did not take these actions in time on that day.
Only after the race ended did the organizers clean the venue and equipment.
Many people believe that post-race cleaning does not address the problems that occurred during the competition.
The real question is: While everyone was still competing, why did no one take action?
The head of HYROX later issued a public apology.
He stated that the organizers did not handle the situation correctly at the time, and this was their responsibility.
HYROX subsequently updated the competition rules.
The new rules state that if a physical issue affects the safety of the individual or others, the person in charge can require the contestant to withdraw from the race.
Staff can also call doctors into the venue, close off an area, and inspect and clean the equipment.
This does not mean that every instance of physical discomfort requires withdrawal.
It shifts the responsibility for on-site judgment to the staff.
Athletes are striving to complete the race and find it difficult to simultaneously judge the safety of others.
Staff members have medical and venue information, making them more suitable to make this decision.
Sympathy for this contestant and protection for other contestants can coexist.
She needs help, and the people behind her need safety.
The new rules have already been written down.
Whether the staff can act in time when problems occur next time is the real test.
If you were about to use equipment used by the previous contestant, what would you hope the referee would do first?
