London
Hackney
English transcript reference

In London, several million people ride the bus every day.

Riding the bus is a very ordinary thing.

You get on, you find a seat, you look at your phone, and then you get off.

The whole way, people generally do not talk, and do not look at each other.

But in the east and north of London, there is one bus that is not quite the same.

The driver of this bus does one small thing every day.

When someone gets on, he blows bubbles.

One bubble, two bubbles, a great many bubbles.

The bubbles float out from his side and drift in front of the people boarding.

The bubbles are small, and they are gone very quickly.

But for those two minutes, the bubbles are there.

The grown-ups see the bubbles and smile.

The children see the bubbles and are even happier.

Later, the children nearby all knew this bus.

They gave it a name: the bubble bus.

Some children at the stop would see another bus come and not get on — they were waiting for this one.

This small thing gradually spread.

Hackney Council even went and interviewed the driver, and put the video online.

Later, even an American newspaper wrote about him.

One driver, one two-minute gesture a day, and that is how he became known.

Right — now this year.

The bus company came to him and said: you cannot do this any more.

The company said it was out of safety considerations.

But specifically, what safety problem?

The company did not say.

To this day it still has not said.

The company only said one thing: what we do is get Londoners where they need to go.

The driver stopped, and he no longer blows bubbles.

He is still the same driver, still driving that same bus every day.

He just does not blow bubbles.

That bus is still running, still the same route, still the same people.

But when the children get on, there are no longer any bubbles in front of them.

Think about it: a small thing that made a lot of people happy — where exactly is it unsafe?

And if nobody can say, then why did it have to stop?
