马拉松全程是42公里多一点。A marathon is a little over 42 kilometers in total.
一般的爱好者跑下来要四个小时左右。A typical amateur takes around four hours to finish.
专业运动员,世界上最厉害的那些人,以前最快也要两个小时多一点。Professional athletes — the best in the world — used to need just over two hours at their fastest.
跑进两个小时,就是体育界的一个梦。Going under two hours has been a dream of the sport.
这个梦,几十年来都没人做到。A dream that, for decades, no one had achieved.
为什么这么难?Why is it so hard?
我们来想一想。Let's think about it.
跑42公里,平均每一公里要跑两分五十秒以内。To run 42 kilometers, you need to average under two minutes fifty seconds per kilometer.
两分五十秒跑一公里,听起来不算太快。Two minutes fifty seconds for one kilometer doesn't sound that fast.
但是你要这样的速度,连续跑42公里。But you have to keep that pace continuously for 42 kilometers.
中间一秒都不能停。You can't stop for even a second along the way.
不能慢下来。You can't slow down.
不能喘气。You can't catch your breath.
对身体的要求实在是太高了。The demand on the body is just too high.
有人做过研究。People have done research on this.
就是有专家分析过,人的身体到底能不能跑这么快。Experts have analyzed whether the human body can actually run that fast.
以前很多专家说:可能不行。Many experts used to say: probably not.
但是萨维做到了。But Sabbé did it.
他不但做到了,还跑得很轻松。He didn't just do it — he made it look easy.
这是怎么回事呢?What's going on here?
我们看看以前的纪录。Let's look at the previous record.
2023年的时候,有一个肯尼亚人,叫基普图姆。In 2023, there was a Kenyan named Kiptum.
他在美国芝加哥的马拉松比赛中跑出了两小时零三十五秒。He ran two hours and thirty-five seconds at the Chicago Marathon in the USA.
这是当时的世界纪录。That was the world record at the time.
所有人都说:基普图姆很有可能在下一次比赛中跑进两小时。Everyone said: Kiptum is very likely to break two hours in his next race.
可惜的是,基普图姆后来出了一场车祸,去世了。Sadly, Kiptum later died in a car accident.
所以他没能完成这个梦想。So he never realized that dream.
没想到,几年之后,是他的同胞萨维完成了这个梦。Surprisingly, a few years later, it was his fellow countryman Sabbé who fulfilled the dream.
而且不只是跑进两小时这么简单。And not just by going under two hours either.
萨维比基普图姆的纪录还快了一分多钟。Sabbé beat Kiptum's record by more than a minute.
一分多钟,听起来不多。A minute or so doesn't sound like much.
在马拉松比赛中,这是一个非常大的进步。But in marathon terms, it's a huge improvement.
更让人吃惊的是,那一天还有两个人也跑得很快。What's even more astonishing is that two other people also ran very fast that day.
第二名叫科杰尔查,来自埃塞俄比亚。Second place was Kojelcha, from Ethiopia.
他跑了一小时五十九分四十一秒。He ran one hour, fifty-nine minutes, forty-one seconds.
也跑进了两小时。Also under two hours.
而且这是他的第一次马拉松比赛!And it was his first marathon ever!
第一次跑马拉松就跑出这样的成绩,前所未有。Running that kind of time in your debut marathon — unprecedented.
"前所未有"就是以前从来没有过。"Unprecedented" means it has never happened before.
第三名叫基普里莫,来自乌干达。Third place was Kiplimo, from Uganda.
他跑了两小时零二十八秒。He ran two hours and twenty-eight seconds.
没有跑进两小时,但是也比基普图姆以前的世界纪录还要快。He didn't break two hours, but he was still faster than Kiptum's old world record.
所以那一天,三个人都打破了以前的世界纪录。So that day, three people all broke the previous world record.
这种事情,在马拉松比赛的历史上,是第一次发生。This kind of thing has never happened in marathon history before.
我们再来说说女子组。Now let's talk about the women's race.
女子组的比赛比男子组早开始。The women's race started earlier than the men's.
得第一的是埃塞俄比亚的阿塞法。The winner was Asefa, from Ethiopia.

有人说这是"科技跑鞋"。Some people call them "tech shoes."
也有人说这有点像作弊。Others say they're a bit like cheating.
但是国际田联说,这种鞋是允许的。But World Athletics says these shoes are allowed.
所以现在所有的运动员都穿这种鞋。So now all the athletes wear them.
其次,训练方法也进步了。Second, training methods have advanced.
现在的运动员,训练比以前更科学。Today's athletes train more scientifically than before.
他们用很多科学的方法,比如分析心跳、分析呼吸、分析身体的每一个方面。They use many scientific methods — analyzing heart rate, breathing, every aspect of the body.

最后,是运动员之间的比拼。Lastly, it's the competition between athletes.
当三个人都跑得很快的时候,他们会互相帮助。When three people are all running fast, they help each other.
我跟着你跑,你跟着他跑。I follow you, you follow him.
这样大家都能跑得更快。That way everyone runs faster.
如果只有一个人跑,往往跑不了这么快。If you're alone, you usually can't run that fast.
所以这一次的成功,是很多原因加起来的结果。So this success was the result of many factors coming together.

也许过几年,跑进两小时就不算什么了。Maybe in a few years, going under two hours won't be a big deal.

现在跑进十秒的人很多。Now lots of people go under ten.
也许马拉松也会这样。Maybe the marathon will be the same.
但是不管怎么说,萨维永远是第一个。But no matter what, Sabbé will always be the first.
他的名字,会被写进体育的历史里。His name will be written into sports history.
他在伦敦那一天的故事,会被人讲很多很多年。The story of his day in London will be told for many, many years.
现在我们想一想,这件事跟我们普通人有什么关系?Now let's think — what does this have to do with ordinary people like us?
我们都不是专业的运动员。We aren't professional athletes.
我们都跑不了两小时的马拉松。We can't run a two-hour marathon.
但是我们可以从这件事里学到一些东西。But we can learn some things from this.
第一,看起来不可能的事情,可能是有可能的。First, things that look impossible may actually be possible.
只是需要更多的努力,更好的方法,更长的时间。They just need more effort, better methods, more time.
第二,有目标很重要。Second, having a goal matters.
萨维从小就有一个目标:跑得最快。From a young age, Sabbé had a goal: to run the fastest.
他每天为这个目标努力。He worked toward that goal every day.
最后他做到了。Eventually, he made it.
我们也可以有自己的目标。We can have our own goals too.
不一定是跑步。Not necessarily running.
可能是工作上的目标,可能是学习上的目标。Maybe a goal at work, maybe a goal in our studies.
有目标的人,比没有目标的人,走得更远。People with goals go further than people without.
第三,每个人都有自己的时间。Third, everyone has their own timing.
萨维三十一岁才打破纪录。Sabbé broke the record at age thirty-one.
在跑步运动员里,三十一岁不算年轻。Among runners, thirty-one isn't young.
但是他还是做到了。But he still did it.
所以,不要觉得自己晚了。So, don't think you're too late.
任何时候开始,都不算晚。It's never too late to start.
