Today let's talk about a dramatic, deeply emotional World Cup knockout game: Portugal beat Croatia two to one with a last-gasp winner to scrape through.
This was not just a hard-fought battle, but the farewell stage for two legendary veterans.
First, a word on Portugal.
Portugal's heartbeat is still that familiar name — Ronaldo.
A legend of world soccer, Ronaldo is now past forty, and this is almost certainly his final World Cup.
So for him, every game is priceless; a loss would mean the end of the dream.
And their opponents Croatia have an old hero of their own: the midfield maestro Modrić.
The duel of two veterans lent this game a special layer of meaning.
Alright, into the game.
In the first half, the two sides cautiously felt each other out, the score staying nil-nil.
As the second half began, Croatia struck first.
In the fifty-third minute, Perisic seized a chance and scored, giving Croatia a one to zero lead.
A trailing Portugal didn't panic; they stepped up their attack, and a chance soon came.
In the sixty-eighth minute, Croatia fouled in the box, and the referee decisively awarded a penalty.
Stepping up to the spot was none other than Ronaldo.
He did it in one go, calmly finding the net — one to one!
Worth noting: this was, remarkably, Ronaldo's first knockout-stage goal across six World Cups.
In that moment, the whole stadium erupted for the old hero.
With the score level, both sides gave everything for the win, and the game reached fever pitch.
Just as everyone thought it might go to extra time, the dramatic moment arrived.
In the ninety-fourth minute, in the final stage of stoppage time, Leão delivered a pinpoint cross, and young substitute forward Ramos rose high to power in a header, putting Portugal ahead two to one.
But the story wasn't over.
In the very last moment, Croatia also put the ball into Portugal's net, seemingly leveling it.
However, after a video review, the referee ruled the attacker had been offside, and the goal was disallowed.
And so, Portugal held on to a nervy win.
So, how should this game be judged?
For Portugal and Ronaldo, this is a hugely significant win, and their World Cup journey lives on.
The veteran steadied the ship with a penalty, and the youngster stepped up at the last moment; this blend of old and new is Portugal's greatest strength.
That said, winning so narrowly is also a warning: to go further, they must play more solidly.
And for Croatia, this defeat is unbearably cruel.
They battled tenaciously, only to fall at the final hurdle.
More poignant still, this was also veteran Modrić's final World Cup, and with that he bid farewell to the stage he loves so dearly.
That's Portugal two to one Croatia, a game belonging to legends, and to farewells.
See you next match.
