U.S. military aid to Israel, under the current ten-year framework, is not due to expire until 2028.
But Trump said in a television interview on voting day that the money would stop by the end of this year.
His reasoning was quite simple: Israel is already 'thriving,' and military aid is just a 'bad talking point.'
According to reports, he also proposed that the roughly $4 billion in annual military aid could simply be cut.
These remarks came at an awkward moment: Republicans had just lost the midterm elections, and Democrats had taken both the House and Senate.
The day after the election, Vice President Vance attributed the defeat to the war in Iran and America's relationship with Israel.
He released a post-election analysis, listing steps that included 'ending the war' and 'changing our relationship with Israel.'
In Michigan, senator-elect El-Sayed won a key Senate race.
He criticized U.S. military aid to Israel and accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, which Israel denies.
On the campaign finance front, AIPAC announced before the election that it would no longer endorse candidates or directly donate to campaigns.
But it still plans to continue investing through the super PAC 'United Democracy Project.'
In this cycle, direct donations from the committee's members exceeded $90 million; in the Michigan Democratic primary, it spent more than $30 million on El-Sayed.
Israel is also being shaken: in late October, Netanyahu lost his parliamentary majority.
He himself actually advocates phasing out U.S. aid over ten years.
Israeli diplomats privately call him and his far-right coalition 'already toxic in America.'
The current aid is a ten-year framework, $3.8 billion per year, roughly $4 billion, expiring in 2028.
Trump's statement surprised Israeli officials.
Since the Gaza war began, cumulative U.S. military aid to Israel has reached $21.7 billion.
If aid is truly cut off, Israel's budget will face a $7 billion shortfall over the next two years.
Trump's alternative is that Israel can pay for itself and continue buying American weapons.
An even bigger bill lies ahead: after 2028, Israel will have to pay another $10 billion for weapons already ordered.
Beyond money, there is another layer: diplomatic cover.
The U.S. has repeatedly used its veto in the Security Council to block resolutions against Israel.
Britain has announced sanctions over violent attacks by settlers in the West Bank.
The bond between the U.S. and Israel goes far beyond money: the U.S. maintains radar and intelligence facilities in Israel and recently expanded an air base in the Negev.
The two sides share intelligence and satellite resources, and Israel still has friends in Congress, including Schumer and Jeffries.
The $4 billion annual military aid is not due to expire until 2028, but its political life may have ended early.
