Today we're going to talk about a very special World Cup match.
This match is Turkey versus Paraguay.
Let's give the result first: Paraguay won, one to zero.
This match was special because it had two memorable things about it.
First, Paraguay's goal came especially, especially early.
Second, Turkey shot a lot, yet didn't score a single goal.
Let's first talk about the two teams.
Turkey comes from Europe and is a capable team.
However, before this match, Turkey had already lost one game.
So this match was extremely crucial for them.
If they lost again, Turkey would be eliminated and go home early.
Paraguay comes from South America and is a team that defends very well.
They're physically strong and play tenaciously, never easy to deal with.
For Paraguay, this match was just as important; they wanted three points too.
So both teams really wanted to win, and the match was intense from the start.
As the match began, no one expected a goal to come so quickly.
Only about a minute in, Paraguay scored first.
The scorer was Paraguay's player Galarza.
One to zero — Paraguay led very, very early.
It's one of the fastest goals of this World Cup.
For Turkey, this opening was terrible.
They already had to win, and now they were behind right from the start.
After scoring this goal, Paraguay began defending with everything.
They dropped back and guarded the goal together, trying to protect this lead.
Turkey of course were anxious; they had to score.
So Turkey began to attack again and again.
They used crosses, shots, corners — every method.
Throughout the match, Turkey shot a great number of times.
Some say they shot more than thirty times in all.
Taking that many shots is already no easy feat.
But the ball just wouldn't go in.
Paraguay defended very tenaciously, and the goalkeeper was key too.
A few times, Turkey's ball nearly went in, but sadly none did.
The Turkey fans in the stands stood up time and again, only to sit back down disappointed.
What made it harder was that later, Paraguay was even down a man.
One player was sent off by the referee for a foul.
In soccer, a player who is sent off can't come back, and can't be replaced.
That is to say, Paraguay had only ten men left on the pitch.
By rights, with one fewer man, defending would be harder and the pressure greater.
Now Turkey's chances seemed to grow.
But Paraguay still gritted their teeth and held their goal.
Each of them fought even harder, blocking the ball away time and again.
The minutes ticked by, and Turkey still couldn't score.
In the end, the match finished one to zero.
Relying on that opening goal, Paraguay won the match.
For Paraguay, this was a very important victory.
Being a man down and still holding on — that's truly tenacious.
And for Turkey, this was a very painful result.
They took so many shots, yet didn't score a single goal.
Losing this match, they were eliminated early and had to go home.
Their World Cup ended just like that, so early.
For Turkey's players and fans, it was truly a shame, and very sad.
After the match, many people were talking about it.
Some said soccer is sometimes just this cruel.
Turkey didn't play badly and shot a lot, but without a goal, they could only concede defeat.
Playing a lot and shooting a lot doesn't necessarily mean you'll win.
Others said Paraguay's defending was so tenacious — holding on a man down deserves admiration.
In fact, this is the interesting, and also most cruel, part of soccer.
Whether or not you score often matters more than how many times you shoot.
Alright, that's the Turkey versus Paraguay match.
Paraguay won a narrow one to zero; Turkey were eliminated, to their regret.
Paraguay holding on a man down was truly tenacious.
This was a memorable, somewhat cruel match.
Thank you for listening; see you next time.
