Today let's talk about a World Cup knockout game Morocco played superbly: Morocco beat co-hosts Canada three to zero to march proudly into the last eight.
This was a perfect showcase of the strength of African soccer.
First, a word on Morocco.
Morocco are one of the fastest-rising teams of recent years; at the last World Cup they fought all the way to the semi-finals, making history for African teams.
Most of their players ply their trade in Europe's top leagues — technically excellent, physically strong, a very mature and formidable side.
Their opponents Canada, as one of this World Cup's hosts, were on a historic journey of their own, carrying a stadium full of fans' hopes.
Alright, into the game.
In the first half, both sides played fairly cautiously; Morocco held the initiative but couldn't break the deadlock for a while, the score nil-nil.
The real turning point came in the second half.
In the fiftieth minute, Morocco's right-sided hub Hakimi delivered a precise pass, and the onrushing midfielder Ounahi struck a powerful long-range shot from outside the box that flew straight into the net — zero to one.
This brilliant screamer blew open Canada's goal.
Having taken the lead, Morocco grew braver the more they played.
Not long after, Ounahi again seized a gap in Canada's back line and calmly slotted home his second — zero to two.
Two goals in hand, Morocco took complete control of the game.
In stoppage time, substitute Rahimi added another off a Brahim Díaz assist, locking the final score at zero to three.
In the end, Morocco cleanly kept a clean sheet against the hosts and powered into the last eight.
So, how should this game be judged?
For Morocco, this is a highly convincing win.
They were excellent at both ends, and Ounahi's brace in particular showed world-class quality.
A Morocco like this is, without doubt, an opponent every title favorite must take seriously.
For Canada, this defeat, though a pity, is entirely understandable.
They ran into an opponent clearly stronger and far more experienced on the big stage.
But as hosts, reaching a World Cup knockout for the first time is itself a piece of history to be remembered forever.
That's Morocco three to zero Canada, a win belonging to Ounahi, and to African soccer.
See you next match.
