The US midterm elections are over, and the Republicans lost badly.
They lost the Senate.
They didn't keep the House either.
Now both the Senate and the House belong to the Democrats.
Losing both chambers is a huge defeat for President Trump.
The midterms are an election held when the president is halfway through his term.
Many people say the Republicans' loss in these midterms is connected to a war.
In February, the US economy was still doing well.
The people in charge of the economy brought him some papers to look at, and they were all good news.
But just a few days later, he went to war with Iran.
Many people don't like this war.
More than twenty American soldiers died in this war.
The war cost more than 47 billion US dollars.
The price of gasoline also rose by 40 percent.
For ordinary people, filling up the tank is getting more and more expensive.
In the spring, people around him said this war would affect the election.
He said there was still plenty of time, and they could talk about it later.
A commentator used to support him very much.
This commentator said it was the biggest mistake in the last twenty years.
Other commentators also said this war was bad.
In January, another thing happened.
A police officer in charge of the border shot and killed a nurse.
This nurse was thirty-seven years old.
The nurse died, and the situation at the border made many people very angry.
Later, he replaced the minister in charge of the border.
During the election, he supported some candidates.
These candidates were running in four places.
He also went to thirty places to speak for the candidates.
As a result, the Democrats won in all four of these places.
Not one of these four candidates won.
In September, the price of gasoline rose sixteen cents in a single week.
The Democrats also spent money to take places that used to be very safe.
People around him told him to talk more about how expensive life is.
Some people said he would lose, and he said those words were all fake.
The day before the election, he spoke for almost an hour.
He talked about the things he had built for the capital, not the things ordinary people care about.
Later he told reporters: "The biggest problem is that my name isn't on the ballot."
A person who helped him raise money also gave his own view.
He said: "In this election, the most important thing is the economy."
