Today let's talk about an earth-shaking World Cup knockout game: from the desperate position of two goals down, defending champions Argentina clawed back three goals in the closing minutes to beat Egypt three to two and scrape into the last eight.
This was an almost impossible turnaround, and a legendary night that belonged to Messi.
First, a word on the two teams.
Argentina are the defending champions from the last World Cup, with the legendary superstar Messi.
And Egypt are no weaklings either — they too have a world-class star, Salah.
Before the game, almost everyone expected Argentina to win easily, but the way it unfolded defied all expectations.
Alright, into the game.
In the fifteenth minute, Egypt opened the scoring with a lovely header, Ibrahim striking — zero to one.
More dramatically, in the first half a penalty taken by Messi was somehow heroically saved by Egypt keeper Shobeir, and Argentina spurned the chance to level.
In the second half, in the sixty-seventh minute, Egypt scored again, making it zero to two.
Two goals down and having wasted a penalty, Argentina at this point seemed to have one foot in the abyss of elimination.
Yet true champions never accept defeat.
From the seventy-ninth minute, Argentina launched an earth-shattering fightback.
First Romero headed one in from a Messi pass — one to two.
Just four minutes later, Messi took matters into his own hands and scored, leveling it at two to two!
Worth noting: this goal was Messi's twenty-first at a World Cup, breaking the all-time record once again.
And in stoppage time, Enzo Fernández struck the winner — three to two.
Three goals in the space of a dozen minutes: Argentina completed a textbook stunning comeback and shattered Egypt completely.
So, how should this game be judged?
For Argentina, this is a win that was scary in hindsight yet utterly great.
They proved once again what a fearsome weapon a champion's pedigree and never-give-up will can be.
And Messi, with a goal and a record, once again carried the whole team.
Of course, a passage like this is also a wake-up call: a start this poor, if not fixed, will sooner or later cost them.
For Egypt, this defeat is truly cruel.
They did almost everything right, held a huge two-goal lead, even saved Messi's penalty, yet in the last dozen minutes watched helplessly as victory slipped away.
Honorable in defeat, their performance won everyone's respect.
That's Argentina three to two Egypt, a game belonging to Messi, and to a champion's will.
See you next match.
