Speaking of work and time off, let's have a chat.
Do you like going to work?
Many people don't like going to work.
They like having days off.
On days off you can sleep.
You can play.
You can look at your phone.
You can go traveling.
But you can't have too many days off.
Why?
Because you have to work to earn money.
If you don't work, you have no money.
So everyone has to work.
But one day.
A company said something very special.
They said: "You can skip work."
"You don't have to say why."
"If you want to rest, just rest."
This company is called Ctrip.
What is Ctrip?
Ctrip is a very big company.
It helps you buy plane tickets.
Helps you book hotels.
Helps you go traveling.
Many people in China use Ctrip.
The boss of Ctrip is named Liang Jianzhang.
He announced a new rule.
Starting from May first.
The company's employees can rest more.
How many more days?
Forty-five days.
Forty-five days!
That's a lot of days.
One month has thirty days.
Forty-five days is a month and a half.
And you don't have to say why.
Before, if you wanted to take a day off.
You had to tell your boss.
"Boss, I'm sick."
"Boss, I need to see a doctor."
"Boss, something came up at home."
You needed a reason.
A reason is the "why."
But now Ctrip says: no need.
You don't have to say why.
If you want to rest, you can rest.
This is called "no-reason personal leave."
No-reason means you don't need a reason.
Personal leave means it's your own business.
But not everyone gets this.
Ctrip is doing an experiment.
What is an experiment?
An experiment means trying something out.
To see if it works well or not.
They chose six thousand people.
Then split them into two groups.
One group can take more days off.
The other group cannot.
Then they'll see after one year.
Which group does better at work.
Which group is happier.
If the group with more days off does well.
In the future everyone can do this.
Why is Ctrip doing this?
Because Ctrip's boss thinks.
If you are happy, you work better.
If you are very tired, you don't work well.
If you rest more, you'll have more energy.
Ctrip has done many things before.
They let employees work from home.
Two days a week at home.
Three days at the office.
This is called "hybrid work."
It means sometimes at home, sometimes at the office.
Many people like this.
There are many companies in China.
Many company employees are very busy.
They work very long hours.
Start at nine in the morning.
Finish at nine at night.
Work six days a week.
This is called "nine-nine-six."
Nine-nine-six means nine o'clock start, nine o'clock finish, six days.
Many people don't like nine-nine-six.
Because it's too tiring.
No time to rest.
No time to be with family.
No time to do things you enjoy.
So what Ctrip is doing is very different.
Other companies make you work more.
Ctrip lets you rest more.
After this news came out.
Many people were talking about it.
Some people say it's good.
Some people say it's not good.
People who say it's good think: finally a company is doing this.
People who say it's not good think: no pay during the days off, so what's the point.
Yes, this is very important.
These forty-five days have no pay.
That means you can skip work.
But you also have no money.
So some people might not use it.
Because they need money.
But no matter what.
This is a beginning.
A beginning of giving employees more freedom.
Maybe in the future more companies will do this.
So that workers can rest a little more.
