把 + Object + Verb + Place
Use this when you're moving or placing a specific thing somewhere — putting the keys on the table, hanging the coat in the closet, dropping the kids off at school. 把 grabs the object, the verb does the moving, and the place phrase (usually 在/到 + location) tells you where it ends up. This is the everyday workhorse pattern for any action with a definite destination.
Structure
[SUBJECT] 把 [OBJECT] [VERB] 在/到 [PLACE]
bǎ [OBJECT] [VERB] zài/dào [PLACE]
How to Think About It
Chinese refuses to put a 'where to' phrase after a transitive object — '我放书在桌子上' sounds broken to a native ear. 把 solves this: it pulls the object in front of the verb so the place phrase can sit cleanly behind. Think of 把 as a stagehand that clears the back of the sentence for the location to land. No 把, no clean landing spot for the destination.
Examples
请把书放在桌子上。
Qǐng bǎ shū fàng zài zhuōzi shàng.
Please put the book on the table.
他把车停在门口。
Tā bǎ chē tíng zài ménkǒu.
He parked the car at the entrance.
妈妈把孩子送到学校。
Māma bǎ háizi sòng dào xuéxiào.
Mom dropped the kids off at school.
Common Mistake
Learners write the sentence in English order, putting the object after the verb and the place at the end. Chinese can't park both behind the verb — you must front-load the object with 把.
我放钥匙在桌子上。
我把钥匙放在桌子上。
Don't Confuse With
在 + Place + Verb + Object
Use 在 + Place upfront when you're describing where an action happens, not where the object ends up: '我在桌子上写字' (I write on the table) ≠ '我把字写在桌子上' (I write the characters onto the table).
把 + Object + Verb + Result Complement
Same 把 frame, but the tail is a result (吃完, 打破) not a place. Pick this when the focus is what happened to the object, not where it went.
Verb + 到 + Place
Works for motion with no object ('我走到学校' — I walked to school). The moment you add a thing that gets moved, you need 把.
