Modal Verbs
Modal verbs sit between a subject and a main verb to color the action with ability, willingness, necessity, or permission. In Chinese the core set is 会 (learned skill / will), 能 (can / circumstantially able), 可以 (may / permitted), 要 (want to / will), 想 (would like to), 应该 (should), and 必须 (must). Pick the right one and your sentence shifts from 'I do' to 'I can / want to / must / will.' They never change form — no conjugation — and they always sit directly in front of the main verb.
Structure
Subject + [Modal Verb] + Verb (+ Object)
huì / néng / kěyǐ / yào / xiǎng / yīnggāi / bìxū + [verb]
How to Think About It
Each modal answers a different question. 会 = 'have you LEARNED how to do this?' (skill). 能 = 'do CIRCUMSTANCES allow it?' (capability or permission). 可以 = 'is it PERMITTED / polite?' (permission, suggestion). 要 = 'is this what you want or plan?' (intention). 想 = 'would you LIKE to?' (desire, softer). 应该 = 'is this what you should do?' (advice). 必须 = 'is this REQUIRED?' (obligation). Learners default to 能 for everything — but native sentences sound right only when the modal matches the question being answered.
Examples
我会说一点中文。
Wǒ huì shuō yī diǎn Zhōngwén.
I can speak a little Chinese.
你可以坐这里。
Nǐ kěyǐ zuò zhèlǐ.
You may sit here.
我想喝一杯咖啡。
Wǒ xiǎng hē yī bēi kāfēi.
I would like to drink a cup of coffee.
Common Mistake
Learners use 能 for learned skills, producing 我能说中文 when natives say 我会说中文. 能 is for situational capability; 会 is for skills you have acquired. The other classic mistake: piling 不 in the wrong spot — 不 always goes before the modal, not before the main verb.
我能说五种语言。
我会说五种语言。
Don't Confuse With
会 vs 能
会 = learned skill (我会开车 = I know how to drive). 能 = situational capability or permission (我今天能开车吗? = can I drive today?).
要 vs 想
要 is firmer — want / will / need to (我要去 = I want to / will go). 想 is softer — would like to (我想去 = I'd like to go). 想 sounds wishful; 要 sounds decided.
应该 vs 必须
应该 = should (advice, expectation). 必须 = must (no choice). 你应该早点睡 = you should sleep earlier; 你必须早点睡 = you have to.
