On
Reach for this when you want to talk about 'people in general,' 'one,' or an unnamed 'they/someone' as the doer of an action — the French-style impersonal pronoun. In Chinese, the closest equivalents are 人们 ('people in general'), 大家 ('everyone'), 有人 ('someone'), or just dropping the subject entirely. Use these for general statements ('people say...,' 'one ought to...'), rumors and reports ('they say it'll rain'), and abstract claims about behavior or custom. Register depends on which Chinese substitute you pick.
Structure
人们 / 大家 / 有人 / [no subject] + Verb + Object
rénmen / dàjiā / yǒu rén
How to Think About It
Chinese doesn't have a dedicated impersonal pronoun like French 'on.' Instead, it parcels out the meanings: 人们 (people in general — formal, written), 大家 (everyone, more inclusive), 有人 (someone — when the doer is unknown but specific), or simply no subject at all (the verb floats with an understood doer). For 'It is said that...' use 据说. For 'one should V' use 应该 + V with no subject. Pick the substitute that matches the nuance.
Examples
在中国,人们喜欢喝茶。
Zài Zhōngguó, rénmen xǐhuān hē chá.
In China, people like to drink tea.
大家都觉得这个主意不错。
Dàjiā dōu juéde zhège zhǔyi búcuò.
Everyone thinks this idea is pretty good.
有人说今天会下雨。
Yǒu rén shuō jīntiān huì xià yǔ.
Someone said it'll rain today.
应该多喝水。
Yīnggāi duō hē shuǐ.
One should drink more water.
Common Mistake
Learners pick a single Chinese word for impersonal 'one/people.' Chinese splits the meaning across several options — choose by register and context.
一个人在中国吃很多米饭。
在中国,人们吃很多米饭。
Don't Confuse With
人们
'People in general / society at large.' Formal, written. Best for trend claims: 人们越来越关心健康 ('people increasingly care about health').
大家
'Everyone / all of us.' Inclusive, conversational. Best when the speaker belongs to the group: 大家都喜欢周末 ('everyone likes weekends').
有人
'Someone / some people.' Marks an unknown but specific doer: 有人在敲门 ('someone is knocking'). Different flavor — not general truth, but unspecified subject.
