Prepositions of Place
Chinese describes where things are using location words that sit AFTER the noun, not before — the opposite of English 'on the table' or 'in front of the door.' The most common ones are 上 (on), 下 (under), 里 (inside), 外 (outside), 前面 (in front), 后面 (behind), 旁边 (beside), 中间 (between/middle). You usually combine them with 在 (to be located at) or 有 (there exists): 桌子上 'on the table,' 在门前面 'in front of the door.' Single characters like 上, 里 often add 面 or 边 when standing alone.
Structure
[NOUN] + [LOCATION WORD] (e.g. 上 / 里 / 前面 / 后面 / 旁边)
shàng / xià / lǐ / wài / qiánmiàn / hòumiàn / pángbiān / zhōngjiān
How to Think About It
Read Chinese location phrases right-to-left compared to English. English fronts the preposition ('on the table'); Chinese tacks it on the back ('table-on'). The noun is the anchor, the location word is the modifier. When you're using these with 在 or 有, the entire phrase 'noun + location word' acts as a single place-expression — so 在桌子上 reads as 'at table-on,' which the brain translates as 'on the table.'
Examples
猫在沙发下面。
Māo zài shāfā xiàmiàn.
The cat is under the sofa.
邮局在银行旁边。
Yóujú zài yínháng pángbiān.
The post office is next to the bank.
钱包在我的包里。
Qiánbāo zài wǒ de bāo lǐ.
My wallet is in my bag.
Common Mistake
Learners forget to add a location word after a noun, treating place names like locations on their own. With most nouns you must add 里, 上, etc. — saying 在桌子 (without 上) is incomplete because tables have many surfaces.
书在桌子。
书在桌子上。
Don't Confuse With
在 [Place]
在 is the existence preposition ('to be at'). The location words 上/里/前面 are the spatial modifiers that follow the noun to specify where.
Place + 有 + Object
Uses these same location words inside the place expression. 有 announces existence; the location word pins down where.
Country/City names
Proper places (北京, 中国, 美国) don't take 里 — you say 在北京, not 在北京里. Only common nouns like 房间, 学校, 包 need the location word.
