Subject + 把 + Object + Verb + Result/Direction
Reach for the 把 sentence when you want to spotlight what HAPPENS to a specific object — moving it, finishing it, changing its state. You pull the object out from after the verb and stick it after 把, then load up the verb with where the object ended up or what state it landed in. Chinese requires this structure when the focus is on disposing of, handling, or relocating something concrete: putting things away, taking things out, finishing them off.
Structure
[SUBJECT] 把 [OBJECT] [VERB] [RESULT/DIRECTION]
[SUBJECT] bǎ [OBJECT] [VERB] [RESULT]
How to Think About It
把 is a flag that says 'grab this object — now I'll tell you what got done to it.' Without 把, the sentence describes the action; with 把, it describes the FATE of the object. That's why the verb almost always needs a result tail (出来, 走, 完, 在桌子上) — bare verbs feel incomplete because the listener is waiting for the outcome.
Examples
我把书放在桌子上。
Wǒ bǎ shū fàng zài zhuōzi shàng.
I put the book on the table.
他把饭吃完了。
Tā bǎ fàn chī wán le.
He finished the food.
请把窗户打开。
Qǐng bǎ chuānghu dǎ kāi.
Please open the window.
Common Mistake
Learners write 把 sentences with a bare verb because their English brain hears 'I put the book' as complete. Chinese 把 sentences need a result, direction, or location tail on the verb — otherwise the sentence sounds chopped off.
我把书放。
我把书放在桌子上。
Don't Confuse With
被 sentence (passive)
被 puts the OBJECT as subject and tracks what was done TO it ('the book was taken'). 把 keeps the doer as subject and tracks what they DID to it ('I took the book'). Same event, mirror grammar.
S + V + O (plain sentence)
Plain word order is fine when you're just stating an action. The moment you want to specify WHERE the object ended up or that it got finished off, switch to 把.
将 + Object + Verb + Result
Same grammar, formal register. Use 将 in news, legal writing, and announcements; use 把 in speech and everyday writing.
