Subject + 是 + ... 的
Reach for this when you want to emphasize a specific detail about the subject — color, material, origin, time, manner. 是…的 wraps around the descriptive phrase and tells the listener 'THIS is the property that matters here.' For simple definitions ('Apples are fruit') plain 是 + noun works. For 'The apples are red / made of plastic / from Japan,' you want the 是…的 frame because color, material, and origin are characteristics, not categories.
Structure
[SUBJECT] 是 [DESCRIPTION] 的。
shì... de
How to Think About It
Think of 是…的 as a spotlight. The information INSIDE the bracket — the color, the source, the way it was done — is the part the speaker is highlighting. Without 的 the sentence sometimes still works, but it loses the 'this is the relevant feature' emphasis. With 的, you are telling the listener which property to pay attention to.
Examples
天是蓝的。
Tiān shì lán de.
The sky is blue.
这本书是新的。
Zhè běn shū shì xīn de.
This book is new.
这把椅子是木头的。
Zhè bǎ yǐzi shì mùtou de.
This chair is (made of) wood.
Common Mistake
Learners drop 的 and produce 树是绿色, which Mandarin speakers parse as an incomplete fragment. With a color, origin, or material as the predicate, 的 is required to close the frame.
苹果是红。
苹果是红的。
Don't Confuse With
Subject + 是 + Noun
Plain 是 + noun equates two categories (他是医生). 是…的 emphasizes a quality or detail, not a category.
Subject + Adjective (no 是)
For most adjectives Chinese drops 是 (天气很冷). 是…的 is used when you want to spotlight an inherent or defining property, often color/material/origin.
是…的 (emphasis on time/place/manner)
A related 是…的 use specifies WHEN/WHERE/HOW a past event happened (我是昨天来的). Same structure, different job — past-event detail vs. property of the subject.
