Subject + 在 + Verb / Subject + 正在 + Verb
Reach for 在 or 正在 before a verb when you want to say someone is in the middle of doing something — equivalent to English '-ing.' 在 alone marks that the action is ongoing; 正在 stresses that it's happening RIGHT NOW. Both are placed between subject and verb. You can also tack 呢 onto the end for extra emphasis on 'right now.' This is the everyday way to describe what's currently happening.
Structure
[SUBJECT] (正)在 [VERB] (呢)
(zhèng)zài [VERB] (ne)
How to Think About It
正 sharpens 在 by adding 'precisely at this moment.' 我在吃饭 = 'I'm eating' (general progress); 我正在吃饭 = 'I'm right in the middle of eating' (with a sense of interruption). Adding 呢 makes it even more present and conversational. Don't confuse this 在 (progressive marker, before a verb) with 在 the location preposition (在家, 在中国).
Examples
我在学中文。
Wǒ zài xué Zhōngwén.
I'm studying Chinese.
他正在打电话呢。
Tā zhèngzài dǎ diànhuà ne.
He's on the phone right now.
孩子们正在公园里玩。
Háizimen zhèngzài gōngyuán lǐ wán.
The kids are playing in the park.
Common Mistake
Learners try to add 了 to make the action feel 'happening now,' but 了 signals completion or change of state. 我吃了饭 means 'I ate,' not 'I'm eating.' For ongoing action, use 在/正在, never 了.
我了吃饭。
我正在吃饭。
Don't Confuse With
在 + Location
Same character, different role. 在家 = 'at home' (preposition). 在吃饭 = 'eating' (progressive). The verb after tells you which one.
着
着 marks a sustained state on a specific verb (站着 = standing). 在/正在 marks an action in progress. 他站着 vs 他在站起来 mean different things.
Verb + 了
了 marks completion or change. To say 'currently doing,' never use 了 — only 在/正在.
