X means Y
Reach for this in our diglot-weave episodes when a Chinese word has just appeared and you need to translate it for the learner. The pattern is plain English — say the Chinese word out loud, then 'means,' then the English gloss. It is a teaching device, not a Chinese grammar pattern: it lives in the English host's narration so a beginner can decode a hanzi without breaking the listening flow. Use it for the first appearance of any new term and rely on context after that.
Structure
[CHINESE WORD] means [ENGLISH GLOSS].
(English meta-pattern — no Chinese fixed words)
How to Think About It
This is the diglot bridge. The Chinese word is the thing being introduced; 'means' is the bridge; the English gloss is the foothold. Once the listener has heard the bridge once, the Chinese word can return in later sentences without translation. Overuse breaks the spell — the goal is to retire the bridge as fast as possible and let the Chinese word stand alone.
Examples
污染 means pollution.
wūrǎn means pollution.
污染 (wūrǎn) means pollution.

Common Mistake
Hosts sometimes translate the SAME word repeatedly, undoing the comprehension training. Use 'X means Y' on first appearance only; afterward, drop the gloss and let the listener carry the meaning forward.
污染 means pollution. 污染 means pollution. 污染 is a big problem.
污染 means pollution. Today, 污染 is a big problem in many cities.
Don't Confuse With
X, which is Y
An English appositive ('污染, which is pollution, has gotten worse'). 'X means Y' is cleaner for beginner audio because the gloss is fully announced as a definition.
X — Y
Written texts can use a dash to gloss inline, but the dash is invisible in audio. 'Means' makes the bridge audible.
In Chinese, we say X for Y
Useful when you want to highlight Chinese as the target language. 'X means Y' assumes the listener has already heard the Chinese and just needs the gloss.
