懂
to understand
dǒng
What does 懂 mean?
懂 (dǒng) means 'to understand' — specifically, to comprehend the meaning of something (a language, an explanation, a person's behavior). It differs from English 'understand' in two ways. First, 懂 emphasizes successful comprehension as a result, so it pairs naturally with 看 (kàn, 'read / look') and 听 (tīng, 'listen') as a verb complement: 看懂 ('read and understand'), 听懂 ('hear and understand').
Saying 我看了 ('I read it') tells you nothing about whether you understood; 我看懂了 ('I read and understood') confirms comprehension. Second, 懂 is used independently — 我懂 ('I get it / I understand') — much more casually than 明白 (míngbai, also 'to understand')
