一般 (yìbān) is a high-frequency word with two main uses.
As an adjective it means 'ordinary, average, so-so' — describing a thing as nothing special. As an adverb it means 'generally, usually' — describing how something typically happens. Two things often surprise English speakers. First, when used to evaluate things (a film, a meal), 一般 is mildly negative — closer to 'mediocre' than to neutral 'ordinary'.
Saying 这个菜很一般 means 'this dish is just so-so / not great'. Second, the adverbial use ('generally') almost always appears as 一般来说 (yìbān láishuō, 'generally speaking') or just 一般 before a verb: 我一般七点起床 ('I usually get up at seven'). It is interchangeable with 通常 (tōngcháng) in the adverbial sense.

通常 means 'usually, normally' as an adverb and is interchangeable with adverbial 一般 ('usually'). 通常 cannot mean 'ordinary / so-so', however; that adjective sense belongs only to 一般.
普通 means 'ordinary, common' as a pure descriptor — neutral, not evaluative (普通话 'standard Mandarin', 普通人 'ordinary person'). 一般 used as 'ordinary' often carries a 'nothing special / so-so' tone. Use 普通 for neutral 'common', 一般 when judging quality.

一边 means 'one side' or marks two simultaneous actions (一边…一边… 'while…also…'). 一般 means 'general / usually'. Sound similar to learners but completely different meaning.
一半 (yíbàn) means 'one half'. 一般 (yìbān) means 'general / ordinary'. Different tones (yí vs yì) and different characters — be careful when listening.
普通 is neutral 'ordinary, common'. 一般 used as 'ordinary' tends to mean 'so-so / unimpressive'. Saying 这个菜很普通 = 'a common dish'; 这个菜很一般 = 'this dish is mediocre'.
