一边 (yìbiān) has two main uses.
First and most important, in the doubled construction 一边 V₁ 一边 V₂, meaning 'doing V₁ and V₂ at the same time' — this is THE Chinese way to express simultaneous actions, where English uses '-ing while' or 'as.' Examples: 一边吃饭一边看电视 ('eat dinner while watching TV'), 一边走一边说 ('talk while walking'). Both verbs must be things one person actively does.
Second, as a noun, 一边 means 'one side' or 'aside': 站在一边 ('stand to one side'), 这一边 ('this side'). Pronunciation note: in the simultaneous-action structure, 一 takes the second-tone change rule — written yìbiān, sometimes you'll see yībiān in dictionaries, but say yì in fast speech. In casual speech, 边 is often unstressed (yìbian).

同时 means 'at the same time / simultaneously' but is more formal and often used at the start of a sentence to add another point. 一边...一边... is the everyday spoken structure for doing two things at once with one subject; 同时 is more abstract.
边 V₁ 边 V₂ is the casual, faster spoken version of 一边...一边... — same meaning, just shorter. 边走边说 = 一边走一边说. Common in everyday speech.

左边 is specifically 'left side.' 一边 alone can mean 'one side / aside' generally, or pair up to mean 'while doing.' Different specific meanings.
一会儿 means 'a little while / a moment' (a duration of time). 一边 marks simultaneous action OR 'one side.' Don't mix them — different functions entirely.
一面...一面... is the more written/literary version of 一边...一边... Same grammatical structure, more formal feel. In speech, prefer 一边.
