不是A而是B
Reach for this when you want to correct an assumption in one move — 'it's not A, it's B.' 不是 throws out the wrong description; 而是 supplies the right one. The construction puts the real point in the second clause, after the misconception has been cleared. Heavy in op-eds, explanations, and any moment when the speaker wants to say 'no, here's what's actually going on.'
Structure
[SUBJECT] 不是 [A],而是 [B]
bú shì A,ér shì B
How to Think About It
Both halves of the contrast are mandatory. Dropping 而是 turns the correction into two flat statements; dropping 不是 leaves nothing to push against. The 而 is the hinge — it tells the listener 'now flip to what I actually mean.' Native speakers feel the second clause as the load-bearing one; the first is the trash you're taking out.
Examples
这不是借口,而是事实。
Zhè bú shì jièkǒu, ér shì shìshí.
This isn't an excuse — it's a fact.
他不是不会说,而是不想说。
Tā bú shì bú huì shuō, ér shì bù xiǎng shuō.
It's not that he can't speak — he just doesn't want to.
重要的不是结果,而是过程。
Zhòngyào de bú shì jiéguǒ, ér shì guòchéng.
What matters isn't the result — it's the process.
Common Mistake
Learners use 不是A,是B, dropping 而. The sentence becomes grammatically okay but loses the corrective force — it sounds like a list rather than a refutation.

我不是不想,而是没时间。
Don't Confuse With
X 不是 ... 而是 Y
These are the same pattern — just two notations of the same structure. Treat them as one.
不是...就是...
Means 'either A or B' — a forced binary, not a correction. Don't swap with 不是...而是....
不再是...而是...
Add 再 when A used to be true. Plain 不是...而是... implies A was never true.
