反而...
Reach for 反而 when the result flips the expectation — you thought one thing would happen, but the opposite did. It's the Chinese 'instead' or 'on the contrary' that carries a hint of surprise: he studied less, but his grades went up; the medicine should have helped, but he got worse. Common in news commentary, opinion writing, and everyday speech when someone wants to highlight an ironic or counterintuitive twist. Neutral register, but more pointed than 但是.

How to Think About It
反而 is the U-turn word. 但是 just says 'however'; 反而 says 'however — and the result went the opposite direction from what anyone would expect.' Set up the expectation in the first clause (or let context do it), then 反而 flips it. Think of it as the verbal raised eyebrow: 'and yet, somehow, the opposite.' Without that built-in expectation, 反而 sounds off.

他吃了药，病反而更严重了。

He took the medicine, but his illness got even worse.

Common Mistake
Learners drop 反而 in for any contrast and treat it like 但是. But 反而 requires a flipped expectation, not just a different fact. Use 但是 for ordinary contrast; save 反而 for when the outcome contradicts what you'd predict.

我喜欢咖啡，但是他喜欢茶。
Don't Confuse With
但是...
Plain contrast — 'however.' Use 但是 when two facts differ. Use 反而 only when the second fact reverses what you'd expect from the first.
却...
却 also marks unexpected contrast but is milder and goes right before the verb. 反而 is stronger and adds a sense of 'the opposite of what should have happened.'
相反...
相反 means 'on the contrary' as a standalone connector at the start of a sentence. 反而 sits inside the second clause and carries surprise; 相反 is more neutral and explicit.
