Reach for this in formal or written Chinese when you want to say 'as X changes, Y happens too.' 随着技术的发展, 我们的生活变得更方便. (As technology develops, our lives become more convenient.) It links one ongoing change to another. You'll see it constantly in news, essays, and analysis — but rarely in casual chat. The pattern frames a backdrop of change, then states what's happening against it.

How to Think About It
随着 takes a NOUN PHRASE, not a clause. You can't say '随着我学中文' the way English says 'as I learn Chinese.' You need a noun-like chunk: 随着时间, 随着年龄的增长, 随着经济的发展. If you want a verb in there, nominalize it with 的 (e.g., 中文水平的提高). Both halves should describe ongoing or gradual processes — 随着 doesn't work for single events.

Common Mistake
Learners feed 随着 a full sentence with a verb because English 'as' takes a clause. Chinese 随着 wants a noun phrase. Either pick a noun (随着时间) or nominalize the verb with 的 (随着经济的发展).
随着我长大, 我懂了很多事。
随着年龄的增长, 我懂了很多事。
Don't Confuse With
越...越...
越...越... links TWO degree changes within ONE subject ('the more X, the more Y'). 随着 links two SEPARATE processes ('as one process unfolds, another responds'). Use 随着 when the two halves involve different things; 越...越... when they describe the same thing scaling.
由于 / 因为
由于/因为 mark a fixed cause. 随着 marks a parallel, ongoing change — not strict causation. '随着冬天的到来, 天越来越冷' is a co-occurring trend; '因为冬天来了, 天冷了' is a one-shot cause.
当...的时候
当...的时候 marks a specific point in time ('when X happens'). 随着 marks a gradual, drifting change. If you can replace 'as' with 'when' in English without losing meaning, you probably want 当 instead.
