Reach for this when you want to argue that one option beats another — 'rather than X, better to do Y.' It's a comparative recommendation: you acknowledge option X as the obvious or default move, then push the listener toward Y as the smarter choice. Common in op-eds, debate, and analysis where the speaker is talking someone out of one path and into another.
Structure
yǔqí..., bùrú...
How to Think About It
The pattern is asymmetric on purpose: 与其 introduces the option you're rejecting, 不如 introduces the one you're recommending. The two halves must be comparable actions — same actor, same kind of choice. Swapping them ('better to Y than X') is the same logic in English, but Chinese requires the rejected option to come FIRST, no exceptions. Get the order wrong and natives will hear it as recommending the opposite of what you mean.
Examples
Yǔqí bàoyuàn, bùrú xíngdòng.
Rather than complaining, take action.
Yǔqí děng tā lái, bùrú wǒmen zìjǐ qù.
Rather than waiting for him to come, we should go ourselves.
Yǔqí mǎi xīn chē, bùrú bǎ jiù chē xiū yíxià.
Rather than buying a new car, it's better to fix the old one.
Common Mistake
Learners reverse the clauses, putting the preferred option after 与其 and the rejected one after 不如, because they default to English word order. The result reverses the recommendation. 与其 = the one you'd rather AVOID; 不如 = the one you'd rather DO.
(meaning: 'I'd rather travel than study')
Don't Confuse With
B = 'would rather suffer A than do B' — emphasizes willingness to bear a cost. B compares two options and picks the better one, without the suffering frame.
还不如
还不如 = 'might as well…' often stands alone and implies the alternative is no worse than the current path. 与其...不如... is the full two-option comparison.
比起...更...
比起 X 更 Y = 'compared to X, more Y' — neutral comparison. Y = active recommendation away from X. One describes; the other argues.
