B (bú shì A, ér shì B) — not A, but rather B
Reach for this when you need to shoot down one interpretation and replace it with the correct one — 'it's not A, it's actually B.' It's the precision-correction structure in Chinese: A is what people might assume or what's been suggested; B is the real story. Common in arguments, essays, news commentary, and any time you're redirecting emphasis.
Structure
bú shì... ér shì...
How to Think About It
而是 is doing heavy lifting that 'but' alone doesn't capture in English. The 而 signals a pivot — same speaker, same topic, but a sharper turn than 但是 would give. 不是A,是B works in casual speech, but 而是 is what you reach for when the contrast is the whole point of the sentence: the structure forces the listener to throw out A entirely and accept B as the only valid reading.
Examples
Zhè bú shì wèntí, ér shì jīhuì.
This isn't a problem; it's an opportunity.
Tā bú shì bù xiǎng lái, ér shì méiyǒu shíjiān.
It's not that he doesn't want to come — he just doesn't have time.
Zhēnzhèng de zhìnéng bú shì jìsuàn, ér shì lǐjiě.
True intelligence isn't calculation; it's understanding.
Common Mistake
Learners often drop the 而 and write '不是A,是B' in formal writing, where the bald 是 sounds choppy and weak. Conversely, they sometimes use 但是 instead of 而是, which is wrong here — 但是 introduces a contrast, not a correction. If you're replacing A with B (not adding new info), it has to be 而是.
Don't Confuse With
A 不是 B,是 C
Casual spoken version with the bare 是. Same meaning, but drops the formal 而. Use 而是 in essays and news; the bare version in everyday speech.
不但...而且...
Adds B on top of A ('not only A but also B'), keeping both. B replaces A with B. Don't swap them — the meaning flips.
不是...就是...
Means 'either A or B' — both are possible. B says A is wrong and B is right. The first lists options; the second issues a correction.
