并不/并非……而是……
Reach for this when you want to correct a misconception with weight — 'it's not actually X, but rather Y.' The 并 in front of 不/非 adds a tone of 'contrary to what you might think.' Use it to overturn a wrong assumption, sharpen a definition, or make a contrarian point in essays, debates, and op-eds. Formal register, common in argumentative writing and news commentary. In casual speech you'd say 不是...而是... — drop the 并 unless you want extra force.

How to Think About It
Plain 不是...而是... is a neutral correction: 'not X, but Y.' Adding 并 in front upgrades it to 'contrary to popular belief, not X.' The 并 carries the unspoken pushback against an assumed view. 而是 then delivers the true answer. The pattern is almost always used to argue against something the listener (or reader) was just assuming. 并非 is the more formal/literary variant of 并不.

Common Mistake
Learners use 并不/并非 alone, expecting it to mean 'really not.' The pattern needs the 而是 follow-up to do its corrective work — without it, the sentence feels incomplete.

Don't Confuse With
不是...而是...
Same logic, neutral register. Use 不是...而是... in everyday speech and writing; reach for 并不/并非 when you want to push back against an assumption.
并不 + adjective
Standalone 'really not / by no means.' 这并不难 ('this isn't actually hard'). When followed by 而是, it sets up a correction; alone, it's just emphatic negation.
其实...
'Actually...' — softer correction without the formal negative structure. Use 其实 for casual revelations; use 并不...而是... when you want a structured 'not X, but Y' argument.
