除了……，还有……
Reach for this when you want to add one more thing on top of something you've already mentioned — 'besides X, there's also Y.' It's the standard additive construction in Chinese: 除了 marks the thing you already have on the table, and 还有 introduces what you're adding. Use it when listing items, expanding a category, or pointing out that the first thing isn't the whole picture.

How to Think About It
Think of 除了 as putting Item A aside on the shelf — not removing it from the list, just acknowledging 'yes, that one we know about.' Then 还有 brings out Item B as additional inventory. This is the additive flavor of 除了 ('besides, also'). The same word 除了 can also mean 'except' when paired with 都 — same grammar, opposite math. With 还有 it always means 'in addition to.'

Common Mistake
Learners often drop 还 and write 除了……，有…… because they translate word-for-word from 'besides X, there is Y.' But Chinese needs 还 to mark Y as an addition — without it, the sentence sounds incomplete and the additive logic is missing.
除了苹果, 有香蕉。
除了苹果, 还有香蕉。
Don't Confuse With
除了……，都……
Same opener 除了, but with 都 it means 'except' — Item A is the exception, everything else applies. '除了他, 大家都来了' = 'Except him, everyone came.' Switch to 还有 only when you mean 'in addition to.'
不但……而且……
不但...而且... links two qualities or actions of the same subject ('not only smart, but also kind'). 除了...还有... lists separate items in a category.
还有
Solo 还有 just tacks on another thing without flagging the first one. 除了...还有... explicitly frames the first item as already known/given, then adds. The 除了 half changes the rhetorical setup.
