莫过于
Reach for 莫过于 when you want to single out one example as the most extreme — 'nothing surpasses X,' 'the X-est of all is Y.' Formal and slightly literary, common in opinion pieces, speeches, essays, and reflective writing. It picks the prototype out of a category: 'the saddest thing is...' 'the happiest moment was...' 莫过于 literally reads 'none surpasses' — 莫 (none) + 过 (surpass) + 于 (at/than). So 'the happiest thing 莫过于 seeing my child smile' means 'no happiness surpasses seeing my child smile.' Think of it as a superlative spotlight in essay register: you set up a category, then crown the winner. It's the formal cousin of '最 + adjective + 的是.'

'No matter how X, still not more than Y' — a different formal pattern for comparing extremes. 莫过于 names the top of a category; 再...也不过 sets an upper bound.
首屈一指 / 数一数二
These idioms also mean 'top of the list,' but they describe a thing's ranking rather than singling it out from a stated category. 莫过于 needs an explicit category to work.
