Reduplication of Adjectives
Reach for this when you want to make a description more vivid, more affectionate, or more sensory. Single-syllable adjectives double (大→大大, 红→红红); two-syllable adjectives follow AABB pattern (高兴→高高兴兴, 干净→干干净净). Reduplication is common in everyday speech, children's books, food descriptions, and any moment where you want to soften the tone or paint a fuller picture.

How to Think About It
Reduplication doesn't intensify the way English 'very' does — it softens and enriches. '红' is just 'red'; '红红的' is 'a warm, rich, lived-in red.' AABB forms (干干净净, 漂漂亮亮) carry the same effect for two-syllable adjectives. Pronunciation matters: the second syllable often shifts to neutral tone, and 的 typically follows. Reduplicated adjectives can't take 很 in front — they already carry vividness.

Common Mistake
Learners add 很 before reduplicated adjectives ('很红红的'), but reduplication already supplies the descriptive flavor — adding 很 is redundant and sounds wrong. Either say 很红 (with 很) or 红红的 (with reduplication), not both.
她穿了一件很红红的衣服。

Don't Confuse With
Verb reduplication (看看, 试试)
Reduplicated verbs soften an action ('take a quick look,' 'give it a try'). Different from adjective reduplication, which enriches description. Don't mix them — 看看 is a verb, 红红 is an adjective.
很 + Adj
Plain intensification — 'very X.' Use 很 when you want to state degree neutrally; use reduplication when you want sensory or affectionate texture.
Measure word reduplication (一个一个)
Means 'one by one' — about manner or sequence, not description. 一件一件地 is a different pattern; don't confuse it with adjective reduplication.
