Reach for this when you want to say one thing develops IN STEP WITH another — 'as / along with [change], [consequence].' 随着 introduces a process, trend, or evolving condition, and the main clause names what happens as that process unfolds. Common in news and analysis: 'as the war drags on…,' 'with the rise of AI…,' 'along with economic growth….' It is the connector for cause-and-effect spread across time.

How to Think About It
随着 takes a NOUN or noun-like phrase, not a verb clause. 'As the war continues' becomes 随着战事的拖延 ('along with the dragging-on of the war') — the verb gets nominalized with 的. This is the part learners trip on most: you can't just put a regular verb clause after 随着.

Common Mistake
Learners try to put a full subject-verb clause after 随着, but the slot needs a noun phrase. The verb has to be turned into a noun (often by adding 的) before it fits.

Don't Confuse With
当...的时候
Marks a specific moment ('when X happens'), not an ongoing process. Use 当...的时候 for snapshots; use 随着 for gradual changes.
因为...所以...
Plain cause-and-effect with no time dimension. 随着 implies the consequence unfolds gradually as the cause progresses; 因为 just names a reason.
越...越...
'The more X, the more Y' — both halves anchor the same subject's change. 随着 lets the two halves have different subjects ('as the economy grows, people get richer').
