V/A + 起来
Reach for this when an action starts up, when something gradually emerges, or when you're evaluating something based on a quality ('it looks/sounds/tastes...'). 起来 attaches to a verb or adjective and adds one of three meanings depending on context: 1) the action kicks off and continues ('he started running'), 2) a state gathers and emerges ('the situation has become tense'), or 3) the speaker is testing the verb ('it looks easy / sounds nice').
Structure
[VERB / ADJECTIVE] 起来
...qǐlái
How to Think About It
Three flavors share one shape. Test them by asking: is something starting? (跑起来 = start running). Is a state surfacing? (天气热起来了 = it's getting hot). Or am I judging from a probe — looking, sounding, doing? (看起来 / 听起来 / 做起来 = appears / sounds / when you actually do it). The 'judging' flavor often sets up an evaluation that contrasts with reality: 看起来容易, 做起来难.
Examples
这个问题看起来简单, 做起来很难。
Zhège wèntí kàn qǐlái jiǎndān, zuò qǐlái hěn nán.
This problem looks easy but is hard to actually do.
他突然唱起歌来。
Tā tūrán chàng qǐ gē lái.
He suddenly burst into song.
天气慢慢热起来了。
Tiānqì mànman rè qǐlái le.
The weather is gradually getting hot.
Common Mistake
With verbs that take objects, learners stick the object after 起来. The object actually wedges INSIDE: V + 起 + Object + 来, not V + 起来 + Object.
他唱起来歌了。
他唱起歌来了。
Don't Confuse With
V + 下去
下去 = keep going (continuation already in progress); 起来 = start up or emerge from nothing.
V + 出来
出来 = bring forth / figure out / become apparent through identification (我认出来了 = I recognized it). 起来 = a state rises or evaluation perspective.
开始 + V
开始 is a plain 'begin to' marker. V + 起来 adds a sense of the action picking up and continuing, often with energy.
