正在 / 在 + Verb
Reach for 正在 or 在 when you want to say someone is in the middle of doing something — 'is/are doing.' It marks an action in progress at the moment of speaking (or the moment you're describing). 在 is the everyday version; 正在 adds a touch of 'right now, this very moment' emphasis. Optional 呢 at the end softens the tone in speech. This is Chinese's progressive aspect — short of full sentences without it, it's the core way to mark 'currently doing.'
Structure
Subject + 正在 / 在 + Verb (+ 呢)
zhèngzài / zài + [verb] (+ ne)
How to Think About It
Chinese has no -ing ending; 在 does the same job from the FRONT of the verb. Place it right before the verb to freeze the action mid-motion. 正在 zooms in on the exact instant ('right now, at this very moment'), while 在 alone is fine for any in-progress action. Both can take a tail 呢 to soften — 他在睡觉呢 sounds more conversational than 他在睡觉. There's no past version: pair it with a time expression to shift the timeframe.
Examples
他正在看电视。
Tā zhèngzài kàn diànshì.
He is watching TV (right now).
我妈妈在做饭呢。
Wǒ māma zài zuòfàn ne.
My mom is cooking.
孩子们正在公园里玩。
Háizimen zhèngzài gōngyuán lǐ wán.
The kids are playing in the park.
Common Mistake
Learners pile on 了 thinking they need to mark anything past, but 在 + 了 in the same verb phrase is wrong — the action is in progress, not completed. The other common mistake: confusing the progressive 在 with the locative 在 (at/in a place). Same character, different jobs.
他正在睡觉了。
他正在睡觉。
Don't Confuse With
在 (location preposition)
Same character, different role. 我在北京 = I am in Beijing (location). 我在工作 = I am working (in progress). Position tells you which: 在 + place = location; 在 + verb = progressive.
Verb + 着
着 marks a state that continues rather than a fresh action in motion. 门开着 = the door is (in the state of being) open. 在 + verb = doing right now. 'I'm reading' = 我在看书; 'I'm sitting on the chair' (state) = 我坐着.
Verb + 了
了 marks completion or a new state, not progression. 我吃了 = I ate / I've eaten; 我在吃 = I'm eating. Don't combine 在 and 了 on the same verb.
