Verb Reduplication
Repeat the verb to make any action feel lighter, shorter, or more casual. 看 (look) becomes 看看 (have a look); 想 (think) becomes 想想 (think it over for a moment). It's the Chinese way of softening a request, inviting a casual attempt, or signaling that the action will be brief. For one-syllable verbs you can also insert 一 (看一看) or, in past contexts, 了 (想了想 = thought briefly).
Structure
[VERB][VERB] / [VERB]一[VERB] / [VERB]了[VERB]
[V][V] / [V] yī [V] / [V] le [V]
How to Think About It
Reduplication shrinks the action down to one quick, low-commitment dose. 你看 sounds like a command ('look!'); 你看看 sounds like a friendly invitation ('take a peek'). That softening is why Chinese speakers reach for it constantly in requests — 试试, 听听, 等等 — and why it sounds rude or weird with verbs that imply a long, single event (you don't 结婚结婚).
Examples
你尝尝这个菜。
Nǐ chángchang zhège cài.
Try a bite of this dish.
让我想一想。
Ràng wǒ xiǎng yi xiǎng.
Let me think about it for a moment.
周末我们去公园走走吧。
Zhōumò wǒmen qù gōngyuán zǒuzou ba.
Let's go for a walk in the park this weekend.
Common Mistake
Learners reduplicate two-syllable verbs the wrong way, repeating each character separately (学学习习) instead of repeating the whole word (学习学习).
我想学学习习中文。
我想学习学习中文。
Don't Confuse With
Verb + 一下
一下 also softens and shortens ('have a quick X'). 看一下 and 看看 are almost interchangeable, but 一下 leans slightly more 'just once'; reduplication leans 'briefly, casually'.
在 + Verb
在 marks an action in progress, the opposite vibe of reduplication. 在看 = currently watching; 看看 = take a quick look.
Verb + 着
着 marks a continuous state. Don't pair it with reduplication; the meanings clash.
