X 不是 ... 而是 ...
Reach for 不是...而是... when you want to argue, not just correct — strike down a common assumption and replace it with the real point. It is the backbone of opinion writing, debate, and editorial commentary in Chinese. The 而 between the two halves does the heavy lifting: it adds a contrastive 'rather/instead' flavor that bare 不是...是... can't quite match. Think op-eds, business analysis, and any sentence where the speaker wants the reframing to land hard.
Structure
[SUBJECT] 不是 [WRONG FRAME] ,而是 [RIGHT FRAME]
bú shì... ér shì...
How to Think About It
而 is the rhetorical hinge. 不是...是... just lists 'not A, B'; 不是...而是... lists 'not A, but RATHER B' — the 而 signals that the speaker is correcting how the listener should think, not just which label to use. This is why you see it in argumentative prose: the two halves are usually fuller noun phrases or whole clauses, not single words. If you're just swapping one noun for another in casual speech, bare 是 sounds more natural.
Examples
他不是不努力,而是方法不对。
Tā bú shì bù nǔlì, ér shì fāngfǎ bú duì.
It's not that he isn't trying — it's that his method is wrong.
成功不是靠运气,而是靠坚持。
Chénggōng bú shì kào yùnqi, ér shì kào jiānchí.
Success doesn't rely on luck — it relies on persistence.
我担心的不是钱,而是时间。
Wǒ dānxīn de bú shì qián, ér shì shíjiān.
What I'm worried about isn't money — it's time.
Common Mistake
Learners use 不是...而是... for trivial corrections where 不是...是... is enough, which makes their sentences sound oddly formal. Save 而是 for moments when the contrast carries real argumentative weight.
这不是茶,而是咖啡。
这不是茶,是咖啡。
Don't Confuse With
不是...是...
Spoken, casual register for swapping one label for another. Use 而是 only when you are reframing an idea, not just correcting a noun.
不是...就是...

并不是...而是...
Same structure with 并 added for extra emphasis on the negation. Use it when you want to firmly knock down a strong assumption: '问题并不是钱,而是时间.'
