以至于 (yǐ zhìyú) — to such an extent that; so much so that
Reach for this when a situation is so intense that it produces a notable, often surprising consequence — 'to the point that,' 'so much that.' The first clause states a cause or condition; 以至于 introduces a result that exceeds normal expectations. Common in news writing, essays, and emotionally heightened speech: 'He worked so hard that he forgot to eat.' Formal-leaning register — slightly literary, but widely used in journalism and explanatory writing.
Structure
[Cause clause], 以至于 + [extreme consequence clause].
yǐ zhìyú
How to Think About It
Think of 以至于 as a 'so much so that' bridge. The first half describes intensity (working too hard, raining too much, being too excited); 以至于 then lands on the unusual outcome that intensity produced. Unlike 所以 ('so/therefore' — neutral cause→result), 以至于 implies the result is more than you'd normally expect from the cause. It's a quiet way of saying 'this went past the usual line.'
Examples
Tā tài lèi le, yǐ zhìyú zài chē shàng shuìzháo le.
He was so tired that he fell asleep on the bus.
Zhè běn shū tài yǒuqù le, yǐ zhìyú wǒ yì kǒu qì dúwán le.
The book was so interesting that I read it in one sitting.
Yǔ xià de tài dà le, yǐ zhìyú hěn duō jiēdào dōu bèi yān le.
It rained so heavily that many streets were flooded.
Tā gōngzuò fēicháng zhuānzhù, yǐ zhìyú wàngle chī wǔfàn.
He focused on his work so intensely that he forgot to eat lunch.
Common Mistake
Learners use 以至于 for any cause-and-effect, treating it like 所以. But 以至于 only works when the result is extreme or unexpected. A flat consequence with 以至于 sounds melodramatic.
Don't Confuse With
所以...
Neutral 'therefore/so.' Use 所以 for ordinary cause-and-effect. 以至于 reserves itself for results that overshoot the normal expectation.
因此...
'Therefore' — slightly formal, written register. States a logical consequence without emphasizing extremity. 以至于 emphasizes the over-the-top nature of the result.
'Even' — escalates within a list, not between cause and effect. Use 甚至 to mark a surprising member; use 以至于 to mark a surprising result.
