只要...
Reach for this when ONE condition is enough to guarantee a result — 'as long as you try, you'll improve.' It frames the condition as minimal and sufficient: don't worry about the other stuff, just hit this one mark and the outcome follows. The full pattern is usually 只要...就..., where 就 signals 'then automatically the result happens.'
Structure
只要 [SUFFICIENT CONDITION], 就 [RESULT]
zhǐyào... jiù...
How to Think About It
只要 sets a low bar and promises the result on the other side of it. The vibe is encouragement or reassurance — the speaker is saying 'this single thing is all it takes.' Drop the 就 and the sentence loses its 'automatically follows' quality; the connection between the condition and result feels weaker.
Examples
只要你努力, 就会成功。
Zhǐyào nǐ nǔlì, jiù huì chénggōng.
As long as you work hard, you'll succeed.
只要不下雨, 我们就去爬山。
Zhǐyào bú xiàyǔ, wǒmen jiù qù páshān.
As long as it's not raining, we'll go hiking.
只要你说一声, 我就来。
Zhǐyào nǐ shuō yī shēng, wǒ jiù lái.
Just say the word and I'll come.
Common Mistake
Learners confuse 只要 (as long as / sufficient condition) with 只有 (only if / necessary condition). 只要 says one thing is enough; 只有 says nothing else will do.
只有你来, 我就高兴。
只要你来, 我就高兴。
Don't Confuse With
只有...才...
Use 只有 when the condition is the ONLY way to get the result; 只要 says any single satisfaction of that condition is enough.
如果...就...
如果 is a neutral 'if'; 只要 specifically emphasizes that the condition is minimal and sufficient.
无论...都...
Opposite logic. 无论 says the result holds regardless of conditions; 只要 says one condition unlocks the result.
