This game was a duel between two soccer powers, and also the farewell of an old star.
First, a word on Portugal.
Portugal's most famous player is still Ronaldo.
Ronaldo is already forty-one this year, a legend of the game.
Everyone knows this is almost certainly his last World Cup.
Now a word on Spain.
Spain are title favorites too, with many young and brilliant players.
Alright, let's look at the game.
This was a very intense game, with both teams strong.
In the first half, both sides were cautious, and neither scored.
For a long stretch of the second half, the score was still zero to zero.
Spain kept attacking, but Portugal defended very well.
It looked like the game would end in a draw and go to extra time.
But in the ninety-first minute, Spain finally scored.
Substitute Merino seized his chance and struck the ball in — zero to one.
This goal came so late, and was so crucial.
Portugal had no time left to chase it.
In the end, Spain won the game one to zero.
When the game ended, many cameras turned to Ronaldo.
He stood there, and shed tears.
Because he knew his World Cup road ended right here.
So, how should we view this game?
For Spain, this is a hard-fought and precious win.
They were very patient, waiting all the way to the end for that goal.
For Portugal, losing is truly such a shame.
And for Ronaldo, it is even more the end of an era.
He has played for over twenty years, a hero in the hearts of countless people.
Though he lost today, the whole world will remember him.
