并且 (bìngqiě) is a conjunction meaning 'and; moreover; furthermore,' used to link two verbs, clauses, or qualities that go together, often adding a note of 'and on top of that.'
It joins actions or attributes of the same subject: 他很聪明，并且很努力 (he is smart, and moreover hardworking). Unlike English 'and,' 并且 does not connect two nouns — you cannot say 苹果并且香蕉; for listing nouns use 和 (hé) or 跟. That noun-vs-clause split is the key thing English speakers get wrong.
并且 often pairs with 不但…并且 or 不仅…并且 to build 'not only… but also' structures. It carries a slightly cumulative, reinforcing tone, heavier than a bare 'and,' making it feel more written and deliberate.
