与其说A不如说B
Reach for this when calling something A isn't quite wrong, but calling it B is more accurate — and you want to nudge the listener toward the better framing. It's the Chinese way of saying 'it's less X than Y' or 'rather than calling it A, it's more like B.' Speakers use it to reframe an event, decision, or feeling that's been mislabeled. Adult register, common in commentary, essays, and thoughtful conversation.
Structure
与其说 [A],不如说 [B]
yǔqí shuō... bùrú shuō...
How to Think About It
与其 sets up an option you're about to reject as inadequate; 不如 (literally 'not as good as') offers the better alternative. Together: 'rather than say A, it's better to say B.' Note A isn't being called false — just less precise than B. The pattern is about choosing the more accurate label, not correcting a lie.
Examples
与其说他生气了,不如说他失望了。
Yǔqí shuō tā shēngqì le, bùrú shuō tā shīwàng le.
Rather than say he was angry, it's more accurate to say he was disappointed.
与其说这是一份工作,不如说这是一种生活方式。
Yǔqí shuō zhè shì yī fèn gōngzuò, bùrú shuō zhè shì yī zhǒng shēnghuó fāngshì.
Rather than call it a job, it's more like a way of life.
与其说我是老师,不如说我是他们的朋友。
Yǔqí shuō wǒ shì lǎoshī, bùrú shuō wǒ shì tāmen de péngyou.
Rather than calling me their teacher, I'm really more like their friend.
Common Mistake
Learners drop 说 from one of the halves, or replace 不如 with 而是. The fixed pair is 与其说...不如说...; both 说 verbs are required because the comparison is about how to describe the thing.
与其放弃,不如说是止损。
与其说是放弃,不如说是止损。
Don't Confuse With
不是...而是...
Flat correction — A is wrong, B is right. 与其说...不如说... is softer: A is okay, B is better.
与其...不如...
Same frame but about actions/choices, not labels. 'Rather than do A, better do B.' Drop 说 when comparing what to do, keep 说 when comparing how to describe.
更像是...
Just 'more like B' without explicitly rejecting A. Use 更像是 when you don't need to name the inferior label.
